Panama’s new President “Nito” has taken office

On July 1st, 2019 the new President of Panama, Laurentino “Nito” Cortizo (66), has taken office. Nito, who is a member of the Democratic Revolution Party (PRD), won the elections earlier this year in May. He was elected as President on May 5, 2019, winning 33.27% of the Panamanian votes.

Nito is former President of the National Assembly and Minister of Agricultural and Livestock Development. Besides, he was a member of the National Assembly between 1994 and 2004.

On a domestic level, Nito aims to take on problems such as corruption and the wealth gap. Nito wants to fix inequality and reduce poverty amongst the Panamanian society. “We come from a lost decade of corruption and improvisation, of stealing money from Panamanians”, Nito stated.

Furthermore, Nito wants to balance the relationship with China and the United States. He declared his interest in revising trade agreements with China to increase agricultural exports to the Asian country.

Laurentino “Nito” Cortizo will run as President of Panama from 2019 to 2024.
